What’s one of the first, if not THE first supplement that comes to mind when one thinks about the gym? Yep. Pre Workout. And with pre workouts we look for energy, pump, endurance, power but also, FOCUS! This is where L-Tyrosine comes into the mix as its prime function in any self respecting pre workout and sometimes fat burners nowadays.
For its ability to provide enhanced cognitive function and it’s synergistic effect with stimulants, L-Tyrosine has become a staple in pre workout formulas over the years.
WHAT IS IT?
L-Tyrosine is a natural form non essential amino acid formed from phenylalanine, that helps to replenish norepinephrine and is used to produce epinephrine and dopamine. Two brain chemicals that influence mood and reduce stress.
L-Tyrosine is sometimes found in its more soluble form N-Acetyl Tyrosine which is used in various bodybuilding supplements such as pre workout and fat loss products, and in some carbonated energy drinks.
WHAT DOES IT DO/HOW DOES IT WORK?
L-Tyrosine has been shown to effectively improve cognition in the presence of an acute stressor, typically high intensity exercise such as bodybuilding or crossfit. In particular, L-Tyrosine can acutely increase the production of nor-adrenaline and dopamine contributing to an increase in attention and cognitive performance.
Combined with a sensible diet and workout regime. L-Tyrosine can assist in improving cognitive performance and reducing the perception of stress during acute exercise, allowing you to train and compete harder for longer.
HOW/WHEN DO I TAKE IT?
To take advantage of the anti-stress and cognitive enhancing properties of L-Tyrosine, it is best taken 15 – 30 minutes before exercise. Pre workout and sports performance supplements containing L-Tyrosine should be taken with water before exercise.
The most efficacious dose is 500mg – 2000mg per serve.
WHAT ARE THE BEST PRODUCTS?
L-Tyrosine is found in many stimulant and non-stimulant Pre Workout supplements, as well as some fat burners but we have narrowed down to our favourites based upon amount per serve, value for money & taste of the product & of course, general feedback.
